How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photo Session

Maternity sessions are a beautiful way to celebrate your pregnancy and capture this special moment in your journey to parenthood. To ensure you have a stress-free and enjoyable experience, here are some helpful tips for planning your session.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

The best time for a maternity session is between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Some people choose to do a bit earlier – so when you feel comfy! At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully round, and you’re likely still feeling comfortable enough to move around and pose for photos. It’s also a great time to capture the glow and excitement of your pregnancy before the final weeks.

Choosing the Perfect Location

Select a location that feels meaningful to you and reflects your personality. Whether it’s a serene park, or your favorite urban spot, the setting should feel authentic and comfortable. If you’re unsure about where to go, I’m happy to help you find the perfect backdrop for your photos.

Dressing for Comfort and Style

Your wardrobe plays a big role in how your photos turn out. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Flowy dresses, fitted gowns, or casual looks can all work beautifully, depending on your style. Solid colors and neutrals or soft patterns often photograph well and keep the focus on you and your bump. Consider bringing along:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for getting to the location.
  • A second pair of shoes that complement your outfit for the session.

Bringing Special Props

Incorporating personal touches into your photos can make them even more meaningful. Bring items like:

  • Ultrasound pictures
  • Baby shoes or onesies
  • A special blanket or family heirloom
  • Anything else that holds sentimental value for your growing family

Quick Tips for a Stress-Free Session

To make your session as easy and enjoyable as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Timing: Schedule your session between 28-32 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Location: Pick a location that feels authentic to you.
  • Wardrobe: Choose clothes that reflect your personality and provide comfort.
  • Shoes: Bring a pair of walking shoes and a pair to change into for photos.
  • Props: Pack special items that hold meaning to you and your family.

Remember, the most important part of your maternity session is to relax and enjoy the experience. It’s about celebrating this beautiful chapter in your life and capturing memories you’ll cherish forever. This blog features Autumn + Steven at Veterans Memorial Park in Burlington, Wisconsin

Autumn + Steven reached out and I was so happy to capture this sweet moment for them before their babe entered the world.

Here are three words that capture the vibe of their session, along with their thoughts about the experience:

“I feel like 3 words would be comforting, loving, and joyful. I love how there’s such a mix of sweet moments and pure happiness and silliness. The photos were just very “us” and I loved that! I never felt stiff or staged, just very at home”
